Right-handed reliever Travis Harper avoided arbitration with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, agreeing Monday to an $850,000, one-year contract. Harper went 4-6 with a 6.75 ERA last season, leading the Devil Rays’ bullpen with 73 1-3 innings pitched in 52 games. He made $745,000. In six seasons with Tampa Bay, he’s appeared in 210 games - second-most in club history behind Esteban Yan’s 266 - and is 20-29 with a 4.94 ERA. Harper had asked for $900,000 in arbitration and had been offered $800,000.

Clemens pitches BP at Astros minicamp
Roger Clemens made an unexpected appearance at the start of the Houston Astros’ minicamp on Monday, pitching batting practice to prospects that included his oldest son, Koby. The 43-year-old right-hander hasn’t decided whether he’ll play a 23rd season. He led the major leagues with a 1.87 ERA last year but was plagued by back and hamstring problems late in the season. He limped off the field after just two innings in the World Series opener.
